What is Self-Regulation
Self-regulation in children/young people with trauma refers to their ability to manage their emotions, thoughts, and behaviors in response to stressors or triggers related to their traumatic experiences. Children who have experienced trauma may struggle with regulating their emotions and behaviours due to the trauma on their developing brains and nervous systems. This can manifest in a variety of ways, such as outbursts of anger, difficulty concentrating, impulsivity, or emotional dysregulation. Self-regulation skills are crucial for children with trauma as they navigate their daily lives and interactions with others.
One of the key components of self-regulation in children/young people with trauma is emotional regulation. Children who have experienced trauma may have difficulty identifying and expressing their emotions in a healthy way. They may struggle to regulate intense emotions such as fear, anger, or sadness, leading to emotional dysregulation and mood swings. Developing emotional regulation skills involves learning to recognise and label emotions, understanding the triggers that lead to emotional dysregulation, and implementing coping strategies to manage intense emotions in a healthy way.
